Description of the wonder

For centuries, centuries-old snow protected the mountain, keeping it a secret. When the ice gave way, it revealed a landscape full of unforgettable colors.

Visitors who came across it began to affectionately call it «mountain of colors», «rainbow mountain» or «mountain of seven colors» in relation to its stripes of different colors; likewise, the local inhabitants affectionately called it «cerro colorado» (red hill).

Some say that the mountain resembles an Andean poncho, colorful and harmonious, a perfect analogy for its shape and tonalities.

Location of Rainbow Mountain

Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain is located on the route to the Apu Ausangate, a majestic snow-capped mountain. Only a few years ago, few visitors used to go up this route due to the difficulties present on the mountain roads.

Likewise, the mountain is located between two districts of different provinces: Cusipata, in the province of Quispicanchis and Pitumarca, in the province of Canchis; both within the Cusco region.

The mountainous terrain that characterizes Rainbow Mountain also indicates its high altitude: 5036 meters above sea level. Although the access is challenging, the unique scenery more than rewards the effort.

Geology of Rainbow Mountain

Bright Fuchsia comes from red clay mixed with mud and arilites. The white tones come from sandstone rich in quartz and limestone. The intense red is due to iron-laden claystones, while purple colorations emerge from marl, a mixture of calcium carbonate and clay. In contrast, the vibrant green comes from clay rich in ferromagnesian minerals and copper. Finally, the opaque yellow is due to the presence of calcareous sandstone. Each layer brings color and a history of millions of years.

How to get to Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain?

To visit Rainbow Mountain, you can choose between two routes:

Route 1: Take a bus from Cusco to Sicuani and stop in Cusipata, to take another collective transport to the community of Phulawasipata, where the trekking trail to the rainbow mountain begins.

Route 2: From Cusco go to the village of Checacupe (or alternatively, take the route to Ocongate that also passes through Checacupe), once in this village, a cab will take you to the starting point of the hike.

Both routes offer advantages, such as being slightly cheaper; however, for convenience, it is advisable to buy package tours that cover the trip, freeing you from over-planning and allowing you to enjoy more.

Recommendations for visitors

The hike to Rainbow Mountain is challenging but rewarding, lasting between 2 and 3 hours, but each step is accompanied by a breathtaking view; however, to facilitate access, you can rent ATVs or horses from local people. Other recommendations are as follows:

Acclimatization: the high altitude of Rainbow Mountain makes it crucial to adapt in Cusco a couple of days beforehand.

Hydration and energy: Keeping hydrated and carrying energy snacks will avoid unnecessary discomfort, the famous coca tea is ideal to combat altitude sickness.
